First Spin: Week’s Best Dance From Zhu, Jungle & More

Welcome (again) to the Jungle. The British duo returned earlier this week with the announcement of their third album, Loving in Stereo, heading our manner this summer season. Within the meantime, they’ve shared its lead single, “Maintain Shifting.” Taking cues from second-LP songs like “Heavy California” and “Beat 54 (It’s All Good Now),” “Maintain Shifting” is a cool, feel-good disco-soul sermon with its nearly gospel-choir-like refrain and stirring strings. Whereas a 12 months of lockdown has left many people feeling down, the music serves as a divine supply of encouragement to energy by way of the sludge. One lyric particularly — “I might dwell with it, I might dwell with it, oh!” — repeats close to the tip, creating a wonderful burst of catharsis and the document’s rawest second, as if giving oneself permission to acknowledge their doubts and ache earlier than expunging them full-force with newfound optimism. — KRYSTAL RODRIGUEZ
